Paint Correction

Why Does Your Car's Paint Look Dull

The car is clean and it still looks flat. There are six likely reasons, and they need different fixes.

You have washed the car properly and it still looks flat. That is because clean and clear are different things. Something is either sitting on the surface or scattering the light coming off it, and the fix depends entirely on which.

Cause One, Bonded Contamination

Wash the car, dry it, and run the back of your hand over the bonnet. If it feels gritty rather than glassy, the paint has fallout, rail dust and industrial contamination bonded into it. No wash removes this. Clay and chemical decontamination does, and it is the cheapest fix on this list.

Cause Two, Swirls and Fine Scratches

The most common cause by a long way. Thousands of shallow scratches scatter light in every direction instead of reflecting it back, so the panel reads flat even though it is spotless. Look along the bonnet in direct sun. If you see fine circular marks, that is your answer, and correction is the fix.

Cause Three, Oxidation

On older paint, particularly reds and single stage finishes, UV breaks the surface down and it goes chalky. Wipe a small area with a light polish on a cloth. If colour comes off onto the cloth, the surface is oxidised and machine work will bring a great deal of it back.

Cause Four, Water Spots and Etching

Water dried on hot paint leaves minerals behind, and left long enough those marks etch into the clear coat. Light spotting comes off with decontamination. Etched spotting needs machine work.

Cause Five, Product Residue

Layers of spray sealant, quick detailer and tyre shine overspray build into a haze that reads as dullness. A proper decontamination wash strips it back and often reveals a much better finish underneath than expected.

Cause Six, Polishing Haze

If the car was machined before, an aggressive pad with no refining stage leaves fine haze or straight buffer trails. It looks bright in the shade and hazy in the sun. Refining stages remove it.

The One That Cannot Be Fixed

Clear coat failure. It shows as cloudy patches with defined edges, usually on the roof, bonnet or boot, and it often looks like the paint is peeling. Polishing makes it worse, not better. That is a repaint conversation, and you should expect to be told so plainly.

This is the reason paint gets inspected under a light rig before anything is quoted. Four of the six causes above look identical in a dim driveway.

Will a Coating Make Dull Paint Glossy

Only slightly, and it will lock in whatever is causing the dullness. Fix the surface first, then protect it. See what happens before a coating is applied.
