Can Correction Remove Scratches

Some scratches come out completely, some improve significantly, and some should be left alone. The difference is depth, and there is a test you can do in your driveway right now.

The Fingernail Test

Run a fingernail lightly across the scratch. If it glides over, the scratch is inside the clear coat and correction can usually remove it. If it catches, the scratch has gone through the clear and no amount of polishing will make it disappear.

Which Scratches Machine Polishing Removes

• Swirl marks from washing and drying
• Fine scratches from dry wiping or dusting
• Light marks from a brush wash
• Buffer trails and holograms from earlier machine work

Which Ones Need Repair Instead

• Anything showing a different colour at the base, which means it is through the clear
• Scratches showing primer or bare metal
• Key marks, which are almost always too deep
• Damage across a panel edge, where there is very little clear coat to work with

Why a Scratch Can Still Show After Correction

Because removing it entirely would have taken more clear coat than the panel could safely spare. Reducing a deep scratch by eighty percent and leaving the panel with enough clear coat to survive is the right call, even though the honest version of that answer is less satisfying than a promise.

You should expect to be shown where the realistic limit is on your car before the work starts, rather than finding out at handover.

Does Ceramic Coating Fill Scratches

No. A coating is a thin clear film. It can very slightly soften how a mark reads, but it cannot fill a scratch and it certainly cannot hide one. Anything left in the paint stays visible for the life of the coating, which is why correction comes first.

Can You Make It Worse at Home

Easily. Retail scratch removers are mild abrasives, and working one hard into a small area by hand usually leaves a dull halo around the scratch that is more noticeable than the scratch was. Rotary tools in inexperienced hands can burn through an edge in seconds.

What About Touch Up Paint

Touch up paint fills the gap and stops corrosion, which matters on anything down to metal. It does not make the mark invisible, and applied heavily it can look worse than the chip. It is a protection measure, not a cosmetic one.
