Ceramic Coating Preparation
Most of the hours in a coating booking happen before the coating comes out of the bottle.

People book a ceramic coating and picture the coating. In practice the coating is the last hour of a job that is mostly preparation, and that ratio is exactly why two quotes for the same product can be so far apart.
Step One, Understand What You Want
Before anything else, what is the car for and what is bothering you about it. A daily driver being protected for the next five years and a weekend car being taken to its best are different jobs, even with the same product.
Step Two, Inspect the Paint
The car goes under the light rig and the finish is read properly. Swirls, scratches, etching, previous repairs and how much clear coat there is to work with all get established before a pad touches a panel.
Step Three, Wash Safely
Wheels and arches first, then a pre wash, then a contact wash with clean media. Every mark put into the paint during preparation is one that has to be corrected out later.
Step Four, Remove Bonded Contamination
Clay and chemical decontamination lift what the wash cannot: iron fallout, rail dust, tar and industrial contamination sitting in the clear coat. Skip this and the pad grinds that contamination into the paint during correction.
Step Five, Correct the Paint
Cutting and refining stages, set from the inspection rather than from a package name. How far this goes depends on the paint and what it can safely give up. This is paint correction, and it is where the gloss actually comes from.
Step Six, Panel Wipe Down
Polishing oils are removed so the coating bonds to bare, prepared clear coat rather than to residue. The car is then checked back under light, so what goes under the coating is the corrected finish and not filler.
Step Seven, Control the Environment
The coating is applied and cured inside the climate controlled studio, with the car staying indoors while it cures rather than going straight back out into whatever the weather is doing. Temperature, humidity and dust are the three things that decide how the film forms.
This is the whole argument for a fixed studio. You can carry good products and good technique to a driveway. You cannot carry controlled conditions to one.
Can a Coating Be Applied Without Polishing
Technically yes. It is a bad idea on almost any car that has been washed a few times, because the coating is clear and every defect underneath stays visible for its whole life. Every car at Detail 2 Drive gets full preparation and correction before coating for exactly this reason.
Why Preparation Changes the Quote
Because it is where the hours are. A well kept car needs less correction than a neglected one, and the honest way to price that is to look at the car first. Send yours through and you will get a quote against its actual condition.
