Ceramic Coating

What Is Ceramic Coating

What a coating actually is, what it changes about owning the car, and the things it was never going to do.

A ceramic coating is a liquid applied protective layer that bonds to properly prepared paint and cures into a hard, water repellent film. On a car that has been prepared correctly it adds gloss, resists chemicals better than wax, and makes routine washing considerably easier.

It is not a force field. It does not make paint scratch proof, it does not stop stone chips, and it does not repair anything that is already in the finish. Its value comes from making a good surface easier to keep good.

How a Coating Actually Works

The coating goes on as a thin liquid across a surface that has been cleaned back to bare, prepared paint. It spreads, flashes, and then cures into a bonded film rather than sitting loosely on top the way a wax does.

Once cured, the surface has lower surface energy. Water and contamination find it harder to cling, so dirt releases more readily during a safe wash. The car still gets dirty and water can still leave mineral marks if it dries on the panel. What changes is how much effort it takes to get back to clean.

The Practical Benefits

Washing Gets Easier

Traffic film, bug residue and road grime release more readily from a maintained coating. You are still washing the car, you are just not scrubbing at it.

Better Chemical and UV Resistance

A coating gives the paint a sacrificial layer against bird droppings, bug residue and UV exposure. Prompt removal still matters, because the coating itself can be etched if something acidic is left to sit on it in the sun.

Gloss With Depth

Coatings add clarity and slickness, but most of the visual change comes from the paint underneath. A coating locks in the finish it was applied over. That is why the correction stage matters more than the product.

It Lasts, and It Is Warranted

The systems used at Detail 2 Drive are backed by an 8 year warranty, which is a different proposition to a wax that needs redoing every few months.

What a Coating Does Not Protect Against

  • Stone chips and road impact damage
  • Scratches from keys, branches or automatic wash brushes
  • Dents and collision damage
  • Swirl marks already in the paint, which stay visible underneath it
  • Water spots when mineral rich droplets are allowed to dry on the surface
  • Clear coat failure, rust or poor previous repairs

Paint protection film is the product designed for physical impact. Detail 2 Drive does not offer film, so if stone chips are your main concern you should be looking for a specialist installer rather than a coating.

Why Preparation Decides the Result

A coating bonds to the surface that exists on the day it goes on. Oils, wax residue and bonded contamination all interfere with that bond, and any swirls left in the paint stay visible through a clear coating for as long as it lasts.

  2. 02Clay and chemical decontamination
  3. 03Paint inspection under direct light
  4. 04Machine correction to remove defects
  5. 05Panel wipe down to remove oils and residue
  6. 06Controlled application and cure inside the studio

Every car booked in at Pakenham goes through that full preparation before any coating is applied, regardless of which coating tier is booked.

Do You Still Have to Wash It

Yes. A coating reduces the effort, it does not remove the job. Use a pH neutral shampoo, two buckets and a clean mitt, and stay out of automatic brush washes. Full detail on that in how to wash a ceramic coated car.

Is It Worth It

It is worth it if you want easier maintenance and a finish that holds up for years, and you are prepared to keep washing the car properly. It is poor value if you were expecting scratch immunity. Send through your car and you will get a straight answer on which tier suits it.
