Ceramic Coating
How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last
The number on the bottle is a starting point. Four other things decide what you actually get.

The coating systems used at Detail 2 Drive are backed by an 8 year warranty. What you actually get out of a coating across that time depends on four things that have nothing to do with the label: how the paint was prepared, how the coating was applied and cured, where the car lives, and how it is washed.
What Determines Durability
The Preparation
A coating bonds to what it is applied to. Applied over residue, oils or bonded contamination, the bond is compromised from day one no matter how good the product is. This is the single biggest variable and the one most often skipped.
The Application and Cure
Temperature, humidity and dust during application and cure all affect how the film forms. A car that cures indoors in a climate controlled studio has a very different start to one that was coated in a driveway and driven home through rain.
Exposure
A car garaged overnight and used for short commutes will hold a coating far longer than one parked outside in full sun doing highway kilometres. Australian UV is genuinely hard on a finish.
Washing and Maintenance
Automatic brush washes, harsh detergents and drying a car with the wrong towel will shorten the life of any coating. Safe washing is not optional aftercare, it is part of the product working.
Does the Advertised Number Equal Real Life
It represents the system's designed service life under reasonable conditions and reasonable maintenance. It is not a countdown clock, and it is not a promise that nothing will change in year seven. Read what the written terms actually cover.
How to Tell Whether It Is Still Working
Wash the car properly, then look at how water behaves. Tight beading and fast sheeting means it is working. Water lying flat in patches usually means contamination sitting on top of the coating rather than the coating having gone.
Most coatings people declare dead are actually just dirty. A proper decontamination wash brings the behaviour back more often than not, which is worth trying before paying to have anything reapplied.
What Shortens It Fastest
- Automatic car washes with brushes
- Dish soap and other household detergents
- Bird droppings and sap left on hot paint
- Washing in direct sun and letting water dry on the panel
- Skipping washes for months at a time
Does Polishing Remove a Coating
Yes. Machine polishing is abrasive, so polishing a coated panel removes the coating from that panel. If a car needs correction after being coated, the coating on those panels has to be reapplied afterwards.
Get the Coating on Your Car Assessed
If the water on your car has stopped behaving the way it did, bring it in before assuming it needs redoing. Send an enquiry with the car and roughly when it was coated.
