Ceramic Coating
Can You Ceramic Coat an Older Car
Age is not the question. What state the clear coat is in is the question.

Yes, and older cars are often where a coating makes the biggest visual difference. What decides whether it is a good idea is not the age of the car, it is whether the clear coat is still sound.
What Condition the Paint Needs to Be In
The paint needs to be stable. Swirls, light scratches, contamination and dullness are all normal and all workable. What is not workable is clear coat that has already begun to fail, because a coating applied over a failing surface goes wherever that surface goes.
- Cloudy, flaking or peeling clear coat on horizontal panels
- Paint that has gone chalky and no longer responds to polishing
- Areas of bare primer or exposed metal
Those are repaint conversations, not coating conversations, and you should expect to be told that rather than sold a coating.
Does It Need Correction First
Almost always. An older car has usually collected a decade of wash marks, and a coating is clear, so all of it stays visible. Correction is what turns a coated older car into something people comment on rather than something that just beads water.
What Preparation Is Involved
- 01Full wash and decontamination wash
- 02Clay and chemical decontamination, which usually pulls a lot more out of older paint
- 03Inspection under direct light to see what the clear coat can safely give
- 04Cutting and refining stages set from that inspection
- 05Panel wipe down, then the coating applied and cured inside the studio
Will It Make Old Paint Look New
It can get remarkably close on paint that is sound. It cannot fix stone chips, deep scratches through the clear, or previous repairs that were not right. You will get an honest read on where the ceiling is before the work starts.
Paint is finite. On an older car the clear coat has already been polished a few times in its life, so the correct answer is sometimes to take less off and accept a very good finish rather than chase a perfect one.
Is It Worth It on a High Kilometre Car
If you are keeping it, yes. The kilometres on the odometer have very little to do with the condition of the paint, and a well kept older car with corrected and coated paint presents better than a neglected new one.
What About Repainted Panels
Fresh paint needs time to fully cure before it is coated, so tell us if any panel has been resprayed recently and roughly when. Older repairs are usually fine, though they can behave differently under a machine than the original panels.
