How Often Should You Detail Your Car
There is no single answer, but there is a sensible way to work out what your car actually needs.

Most people asking how often they should get their car detailed are really asking a different question: how far can I let it go before it costs me. The honest answer is that a car garaged overnight and washed properly every fortnight needs a professional detail far less often than one that lives outside under a tree and goes through an automatic wash on the way home.
As a starting point, twice a year suits most vehicles in Melbourne's south east. Some cars need four visits a year, some need one. What follows is how to tell which one yours is.
What Is a Sensible Detailing Frequency
For a car that is parked undercover, washed regularly with the right gear and used for ordinary commuting, a full detail every six months keeps it in good order. That rhythm gives you two resets a year, which is usually enough to stop contamination building up in the paint and grime settling into the cabin.
Cars that live outside, do high kilometres, carry kids or pets, or spend time on unsealed roads generally want three or four visits. Cars that barely leave the garage can often stretch to one.
Your Car May Need It Sooner Than That
The schedule is a default, not a rule. Bring the visit forward if any of these apply:
- It is parked under trees, so sap and bird droppings land on it regularly
- It sits outside all day at work in full sun
- It goes through automatic brush washes, which is the fastest way to put swirl marks into paint
- It carries dogs, tradie gear, kids or food on a daily basis
- It spends time on gravel, farm tracks or building sites
What Detailed Actually Means Here
A detail is not a bigger wash. It is a full reset: wheels and arches dealt with first, a pre wash and contact wash, decontamination to pull out what the wash cannot reach, then the interior worked through properly and the glass done on both faces. At the Pakenham studio it finishes with an inspection under the light rig, which is where anything missed actually shows up.
A detail makes a car clean and protected. It does not remove scratches. If swirls and marks are what is bothering you, the service you want is paint correction, not a detail.
How to Tell Your Car Is Due
The Paint Still Feels Rough After Washing
Wash the car, dry it, then run the back of your hand across the bonnet. If it feels gritty rather than glassy, there is bonded contamination sitting in the surface that no wash will lift. That is decontamination work, and it is a core part of a detail.
Water Behaves Differently
If water used to bead and now lies flat in sheets, whatever protection was on the paint has worn off or the surface is contaminated. Either way the paint is now exposed to everything landing on it.
The Cabin No Longer Responds to a Quick Clean
When wiping the console does not change how it looks, the dirt is no longer on the surface. It is in the texture, the seams and the vents, and it needs proper extraction rather than another wipe.
You Have Started Avoiding Parts of the Car
Most people know exactly which corner of their car they have given up on. That is usually the honest signal that it is time.
Does a New or Coated Car Need Less
A ceramic coated car is easier to keep clean and holds its finish for longer, but it still gets dirty and it still needs maintaining. That is exactly what the maintenance membership at Detail 2 Drive exists for: keeping a finish performing rather than rescuing it two years later.
Can You Detail a Car Too Often
You cannot clean a car too often, but you can polish it too often. Every machine correction removes a small amount of clear coat, and there is a finite amount of it. That is why correction is quoted after the paint has been inspected under light, not booked on a schedule.
A Practical Yearly Rhythm
- 01Two full details a year for most cars, one at each end of winter
- 02A safe wash every one to two weeks in between, using two buckets and a clean mitt
- 03Bird droppings, sap and bug residue removed the same day rather than left to etch
- 04Correction and protection considered once, properly, rather than repeated polishing
