How to Maintain Your Car After Detailing

The work is done. Keeping it that way comes down to a handful of habits, most of which cost nothing.

Getting a car detailed is the easy part. Keeping it looking that way for the next six months is where most of the value either survives or quietly disappears. None of what follows is difficult, and most of it is about what you stop doing.

The First Day

If any protection has been applied, ask when the car can be washed or exposed to rain. That window matters, and it is product specific. Beyond that, leave the car alone for the first day and let everything settle.

How Often to Wash Afterwards

Every one to two weeks for a car in regular use. The point is not to make it shine, it is to stop contamination sitting on the surface long enough to bond to it. A short wash often beats a heavy wash rarely.

A Safe Wash Routine

  1. 01Rinse thoroughly before anything touches the paint
  2. 02Two buckets, one with shampoo and one with clean rinse water, and a grit guard in both
  3. 03A clean microfibre mitt, top panels first, lower panels and sills last
  4. 04Rinse the mitt in the clean bucket every panel, not every side
  5. 05Dry with a soft drying towel rather than letting the car air dry

Habits That Undo the Work Fastest

  • Automatic car washes with brushes, which is the quickest way to put swirls back into paint
  • Washing in direct sun, which leaves water spots as droplets dry on hot panels
  • Using dish soap or household detergent, which strips protection
  • Wiping dust off dry paint with a towel, which is just fine sandpaper
  • Leaving bird droppings, sap or bug residue on the paint overnight

If you do only one thing from this list, drop the automatic brush wash. More corrected paint has been ruined by drive through washes than by anything else.

Bird Droppings, Sap and Spills

Deal with them the same day. Soften with a quick detailer or plain water, lift rather than rub, and use a clean towel. The damage from these is not the mess, it is the etching that happens while they sit.

Keeping the Interior in Order

Keep a small microfibre in the door pocket and deal with marks as they happen. Vacuum the front carpets every few weeks rather than waiting for a full clean, and get spills out of fabric while they are still wet.

Maintaining a Ceramic Coating

A ceramic coated car needs the same safe wash routine, just less often to get the same result. Use a pH neutral shampoo, avoid anything abrasive, and if the water stops behaving the way it did, the usual cause is contamination on top of the coating rather than the coating having failed.

When to Come Back

Come back when the paint feels rough after a wash, when water stops sheeting off, or when the interior stops responding to a quick clean. If you would rather not think about it, the maintenance membership on the detailing page handles the rhythm for you.
